European leaders make a toast during a conference, 1908. (litho)
3666849 European leaders make a toast during a conference, 1908. (litho). by Gris, Juan (1887-1927); Private Collection; (add.info.: The Bosnian crisis of 1908-09, also known as the Annexation crisis or the First Balkan Crisis, erupted when on 8 October 1908, Austria-Hungary announced the annexation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, territories formerly within the sovereignty of the Ottoman Empire. This unilateral action--timed to coincide with Bulgarias declaration of independence (5 October) from the Ottoman Empire--sparked protestations from all the Great Powers and Austria-Hungarys Balkan neighbours, Serbia and Montenegro. In April 1909 the Treaty of Berlin was amended to reflect the fait accompli and bring the crisis to an end. The crisis permanently damaged relations between Austria-Hungary on one hand and Serbia, Italy and the Russian Empire on the other. Although the crisis ended with what appeared to be a total Austro-Hungarian diplomatic victory, Russia became determined not to back down again and hastened its military build-up. Austrian-Serbian relations became permanently stressed;

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this lithograph, we are transported back to the year 1908, where European leaders gather for a conference. The image captures a significant moment as these influential figures raise their glasses in a toast, symbolizing unity and camaraderie amidst turbulent times. The Bosnian crisis of 1908-09 serves as the backdrop for this historic gathering. Triggered by Austria-Hungary's annexation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, tensions ran high among the Great Powers and neighboring countries such as Serbia and Montenegro. This unilateral action not only sparked protests but also permanently strained relations between nations. Published in L'Assiette au Beurre magazine, this litho by Juan Gris offers us a glimpse into the delicate balance of power during that era. As we observe these leaders engaged in conversation and celebration, it becomes evident that behind closed doors lie complex negotiations and political maneuverings. The artist's attention to detail is remarkable; each leader is meticulously depicted with distinct features and expressions reflecting their individual roles within this diplomatic dance. Their attire exudes elegance while conveying their respective national identities. This print from Fine Art Finder invites us to reflect on history's turning points when decisions made at conferences like these shaped the course of nations. It reminds us that even amidst conflicts, there can be moments of harmony where leaders come together to find common ground – if only temporarily – for the greater good.
