The Saints was the last major action of the American Revolutionary War, fought near the islets called the Iles des Saintes, just north of Dominica in the West Indies. Admiral Sir George Rodney's victory over the French fleet of the Comte de Grasse foiled the latter's attempt to invade Jamaica and enabled Britain to secure her position in the West Indies by the treaty that ended the war in 1783, even though she lost her American colonies. The battle is also famous as the point of origin of the tactic of 'breaking the line', which was achieved with great, albeit accidental, effect by Rodney in seizing an advantage created by a shift of wind as the fleets began the action.); © National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, London

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning oil on panel painting by Thomas Luny captures the intense naval battle known as The Battle of The Saints, which took place on 12 April 1782. Set against a dramatic sky and choppy waters, the scene depicts Admiral Sir George Rodney's decisive victory over the French fleet of Comte de Grasse near the Iles des Saintes in the West Indies.
The Battle of The Saints was a pivotal moment in the American Revolutionary War, as it thwarted France's attempt to invade Jamaica and solidified Britain's control over the region. Despite losing her American colonies, Britain emerged victorious thanks to Rodney's strategic prowess and innovative tactic of 'breaking the line'.
In this painting, Luny expertly captures the chaos and intensity of battle, with ships engaged in fierce combat amidst billowing smoke and cannon fire. The meticulous attention to detail brings this historic event to life, allowing viewers to immerse themselves in this crucial moment in maritime history.
Displayed at the National Maritime Museum in London, this artwork serves as a reminder of the bravery and skill displayed by sailors on both sides during one of history's most significant naval engagements.
