EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving by Joseph Strutt takes us back to the 15th century, offering a glimpse into the male costumes of that era. The print showcases three distinct figures, each representing a different style and social status. On the left, we see a knight adorned in an elaborate feather cap, mantle, boots, and spurs. His attire exudes power and nobility as he stands tall with his sword at his side. This depiction is taken from Hugues de Lannoy's "Imaginacion de vraye noblesse" manuscript dating back to 1496. In the center, we find a man wearing a tunic and hose paired with cracows – long-toed shoes popular during this period. He is depicted in Guillaume de Lorris and Jean de Meun's "Roman de la Rose" specifically on page 184v where L'Amans tends to the rose. This character represents elegance and courtly love. Lastly, on the right side of the engraving, there is another man draped in a mantle with frilled split sleeves. He appears to be dancing joyfully as captured from page 14v of Harley MS 4425's "Roman de la Rose". Joseph Strutt skillfully handcolored this engraving for his book titled "Complete View of the Dress and Habits of People of England" published in London in 1842. Through this print, we are transported back centuries ago when fashion was not only functional but also served as an expression of one's status and identity. It reminds us how clothing has always played an essential role in human history by reflecting societal norms and individual aspirations.
