The Broken Floes, illustration from The second Grinnell Expedition in Search of Sir

931473 The Broken Floes, illustration from The second Grinnell Expedition in Search of Sir John Franklin... 1856 (engraving)
by Kane, Elisha (1820-57) (after); Private Collection; (add.info.: The Second Grinnell Expedition of 1853 was an American effort, financed by Henry Grinnell, to determine the fate of the Franklins lost expedition. Led by Dr. Elisha Kane, the team explored areas northwest of Greenland, now called Grinnell Land. While failing to determine the fate of Sir John Franklin, the expedition set a new record for northward penetration, delineated 960 mi (1, 540 km) of unexplored coastline north of 82A latitude, and discovered the long-sought open Polar Sea. Kane collected valuable geographical, climate and magnetic observations before abandoning the brig Advance to the pack ice in 1855. While three members of the crew were lost, the epic journey of the survivors inspired the public as a vivid tale of Arctic survival.

The Broken Floes

EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating illustration from the second Grinnell Expedition in search of Sir John Franklin, created by Elisha Kane and now part of a private collection. This engraving, dating back to 1856, transports us to the treacherous Arctic landscapes explored by Dr. Kane and his team. Financed by Henry Grinnell, this American expedition aimed to uncover the fate of Sir John Franklin's lost expedition. Although they were unable to solve this mystery, their journey was far from fruitless. The team ventured into uncharted territories northwest of Greenland, known today as Grinnell Land. Their efforts resulted in an unprecedented northward penetration record and the discovery of the long-sought open Polar Sea. Dr. Elisha Kane meticulously documented geographical features, climate patterns, and magnetic observations during their arduous exploration before ultimately abandoning their ship due to pack ice conditions in 1855. Tragically, three crew members were lost along the way; however, their survival against all odds became an inspiration for many. This historic print not only captures the beauty and danger inherent in Arctic expeditions but also serves as a testament to human resilience in extreme environments. It reminds us of our insatiable curiosity that drives us forward despite adversity and showcases how exploration can push boundaries while leaving lasting legacies for future generations.
