by Dobson, John (1787-1865); 41.2x27.5 cm; Laing Art Gallery, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, UK; (add.info.: Grey Street was the centrepiece of the 1830s redevelopment of the centre of Newcastle by the businessman Richard Grainger. The Newcastle architect John Dobson designed the lower east side of the street, shown in this view, which was drawn by Dobson himself. Dobsons picture may have been made before the buildings were actually finished, as a demonstration of how fine they would look. The grand Neo-Classical style stone buildings became the commercial heart of Newcastle, replacing the previous centre on the quayside.
