EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases an exquisite Attic red-figured bell-krater, dating back to the 5th century BC. Crafted by the renowned Nikias Painter, this ceramic masterpiece stands at a height of 34 cm and is currently held in a private collection. The obverse of this bell-krater depicts the mythical scene of Herakles' arrival in the Garden of the Hesperides. The youthful hero, adorned in his iconic lionskin, approaches from the left while rowing towards shore in a vessel known as the Bowl of the Sun. Helmeted Athena accompanies him, striding confidently towards the garden with spear in hand and her scaled aegis draped over her shoulder. Onshore to their right stands Atlas, holding up the curved vault of heavens adorned with stars and a crescent moon. A berried wreath adorns his hair as he wears a patterned calf-length chiton and bordered himation. To his left lies one tree bearing Golden Apples while another houses Ladon, coiled within it. A Hesperid sits beneath this tree, leaning back on her hand and wearing an intricately patterned peplos with diadem. Completing this enchanting scene is Hermes standing far right atop a rock. Nude except for his bordered chlamys and sandals, he carries his caduceus in one hand while resting his foot casually on top of the rock. The reverse side presents three draped male figures; one holds a staff while another wields both strigil and aryballos between them. Intricate details such as meander patterns along with laurel motifs beneath rim add further charm to this remarkable artifact.
