A veteran of the German campaigns of the Seven Years War (1756-1763), who did not serve in America, he published the book that made his reputation, The Principles of Military Movements, in 1788. Following a succession of staff and field-command appointments he became Commander-in-Chief in March 1809 in succession to the Duke of York, then under a cloud on account of the Mary Anne Clarke scandal.
