Robert Dighton (1752-1814) was a British printmaker, painter, and caricaturist. He is best known for his satirical prints and portraits of actors, politicians, and royalty. His works often depicted the foibles of contemporary society with wit and humor. He was born in London to a family of artists; his father was a scene painter at Drury Lane Theatre. Dighton's career began in 1771 when he produced illustrations for John Bell's Theatrical Magazine. By 1780 he had established himself as one of the most prolific printmakers in London, producing over 500 prints during his lifetime. His work was highly sought after by collectors throughout Europe and America due to its unique style that blended caricature with portraiture. Dighton's legacy lives on today through his works which are held in major collections around the world including the British Museum, Victoria & Albert Museum, National Portrait Gallery (London), Harvard Art Museums (Cambridge), among others.
