LEON TOLSTOI IN A PINK ARMCHAIR, 1909 (oil on canvas)
7215381 LEON TOLSTOI IN A PINK ARMCHAIR, 1909 (oil on canvas) by Repin, Ilya Efimovich (1844-1930); Musei L.N. Tolstogo (Tolstoi Museum), Moscow, Russia; (add.info.: 1909//Oil on canvas
In this portrait, Repin immortalizes the image of an aging Tolstoy. In 1908, when he visited her in Yasnaya Polyana, it was a man weakened by illness and undermined by the conflict that pitted him against his wife over the dissemination of his work after his death. This final portrait made during the writers lifetime was presented at the thirty-eighth exhibition of The Ambulants, in 1910. Tolsto died in November of the same year. As a last tribute, Repin will then paint Tolstoy on the other side of life (one version in the Tolstoy Museum in Moscow and a second in the house-museum " The Penates" in Repino).); Photo © Sylvain Collet

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of Russian writer Leo Tolstoy in a pink armchair, painted by Ilya Efimovich Repin in 1909. In this portrait, Repin immortalizes an aging Tolstoy, depicting him as a man weakened by illness and conflicted over the dissemination of his work after his death. This final portrait made during Tolstoy's lifetime was presented at The Ambulants' thirty-eighth exhibition in 1910, just before the writer's passing later that year. Repin's tribute to Tolstoy extends beyond this painting; he also created two other versions of the portrait—one housed in Moscow's Tolstoi Museum and another in "The Penates" house-museum in Repino. These paintings serve as lasting reminders of Tolstoy's legacy and his significant contributions to literature. In this image, we witness not only the physicality of an elderly individual but also a glimpse into their wisdom and life experiences. The pink armchair serves as a symbol of comfort and reflection for Tolstoy—a place where he could contemplate his thoughts and ideas. Bridgeman Images has beautifully captured this piece from Fine Art Finder, allowing us to appreciate both the artistry behind Repin's work and the profound impact that Leo Tolstoy had on Russian literature.
