LEON TOLSTOI BAREFOOT, 1901 (oil on canvas)
7215384 LEON TOLSTOI BAREFOOT, 1901 (oil on canvas) by Repin, Ilya Efimovich (1844-1930); State Russian Museum, St. Petersburg, Russia; (add.info.: 1901//Oil on canvas
In the summer of 1891, Repin painted in Yasnaya Polyana a study of Tolstoy praying in the forest. In 1900, he returned to the study and used it to produce this portrait, which was first presented in February 1901 at the twenty-ninth exhibition of The Ambulants in Saint Petersburg. Tolstoy was then excommunicated by the Holy Synod, the high authority of the Russian Orthodox Church, for having sharply criticized official orthodoxy. In support of Tolstoy, the audience gathers in front of the painting and places flowers on it. With this refined representation, Repine seeks to make visible the spiritual quest and simplicity in which the writer aspires to live. Alexandra Tolstoy, however, reports in her memories her fathers irritation at this painting: " He removed the boots, its very fortunate that he left the pants! " ); Photo © Sylvain Collet

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of renowned Russian writer Leo Tolstoy in a moment of profound simplicity. Painted by Ilya Efimovich Repin in 1901, this oil on canvas masterpiece showcases Tolstoy barefoot, symbolizing his deep connection to nature and his rejection of material possessions. Repin initially painted a study of Tolstoy praying in the forest during the summer of 1891 at Yasnaya Polyana. In 1900, he revisited this study and transformed it into this powerful portrait. The painting made its debut at The Ambulants exhibition in Saint Petersburg in February 1901, coinciding with an eventful time for Tolstoy. At that time, Tolstoy had been excommunicated by the Holy Synod due to his sharp criticism of official orthodoxy. Despite this controversy, supporters gathered around this painting and adorned it with flowers as a show of solidarity with the writer's spiritual quest. Repin's refined representation beautifully captures both the inner turmoil and serenity within Tolstoy's soul. However, Alexandra Tolstoy recalls her father's irritation upon seeing the painting: "He removed the boots; it’s very fortunate that he left the pants!". This remarkable print allows us to delve into history and witness not only Repin's artistic brilliance but also glimpse into Leo Tolstoy's complex character—a man who challenged societal norms while seeking a life rooted in spirituality and simplicity.
