EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the mythical world of Norse mythology, depicting the awe-inspiring encounter between the monstrous wolf Fenrir and the sacred World-Tree Yggdrasil. Created by an unknown Icelandic artist in the 17th century, this piece measures 33x10 cm and is housed at the Arni Magnusson Institute in Reykjavik, Iceland. In Nordic folklore, Fenrir was a fearsome creature born to Loki, god of mischief. This immense wolf posed a great threat to Odin and his fellow gods. However, it was Odin's son Vidar who ultimately brought about Fenrir's demise by stabbing him to death. The image showcases this climactic moment as Vidar courageously confronts the ferocious beast. Yggdrasil, on the other hand, represents both life and cosmic order within Norse mythology. It is a colossal ash tree that emerged from the body of Ymir (the primordial giant) and serves as a vital connection between different realms such as Asgard (home of gods), Jotunnheim (land of giants), and Niffheim (realm of ice). Its roots extend far and wide while its branches reach towards Asgard where Odin resides. The illuminated manuscript style adds an ethereal quality to this artwork with intricate details highlighting every aspect of this legendary tale. With its rich symbolism encompassing themes of power struggles, destiny, and divine intervention - this print truly immerses viewers into the enchanting world of Norse mythology.
