Statuette of a Serving Girl, c. 1323-1186 BC (terracotta, originally painted)
500147 Statuette of a Serving Girl, c.1323-1186 BC (terracotta, originally painted) by Egyptian 18th Dynasty (c.1567-1320 BC); h:38.40 w:9.20 cm; Cleveland Museum of Art, OH, USA; (add.info.: This statuette of a young serving girl carrying a jar belongs to a select group of hand-modeled figurines usually dated to Dynasties 18 and 19. According to the conventions of Egyptian art, the girls nudity and the sidelock of hair indicate her young age. No more than a dozen of these statuettes are known. Their distinctive features--slit-like eyes, exaggerated hips, triangular delineation of the legs, and finger-depression of the navel--suggest that all were made in the same workshop. Although their exact function remains unknown, it has been suggested that they magically served the deceased as an object in the tomb.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable ancient artifact known as the "Statuette of a Serving Girl". Created during the Egyptian 18th Dynasty, which spanned from approximately 1567 to 1320 BC, this terracotta statuette was originally painted and stands at a height of 38.40 cm with a width of 9.20 cm. Currently housed in the Cleveland Museum of Art in Ohio, USA, it is an invaluable piece that offers insight into the artistic conventions and beliefs of ancient Egypt. Belonging to a rare group of hand-modeled figurines typically dated to Dynasties 18 and 19, this statuette depicts a young serving girl carrying a jar. The nudity and sidelock of hair symbolize her youthful age according to Egyptian art traditions. Only around twelve similar statuettes are known to exist, all displaying distinct features such as slit-like eyes, exaggerated hips, triangular delineation of legs, and finger-depression on the navel. These characteristics suggest they were crafted in the same workshop. While their exact purpose remains uncertain, it has been theorized that these statuettes served some magical function for the deceased within tombs. As an object steeped in mystery and history alike, this Statuette of a Serving Girl offers us glimpses into ancient Egyptian culture while leaving much room for speculation about its true significance.
