A Viennese Memory (oil on canvas)
2956875 A Viennese Memory (oil on canvas) by Mostyn, Thomas Edwin (1864-1930); 90.81x69.85 cm; Private Collection; (add.info.: Mostyn, who was known for his distinctive lush colours and rich impasto, exhibited a similar painting at the Grafton Gallery in 1913, called Beyond. His figure subjects often feature the same woman, probably his wife. He was born in Liverpool and trained in Manchester, after which he attended the Bushey School of Art under Herkomer. His colour is a joy to the eye and very often its riot is bound together in a design through which the conception of the poet shines. EDITORS COMMENTS

The artist's use of lush colors and rich impasto creates a mesmerizing visual experience, capturing our attention from the very first glance. In this particular piece, Mostyn presents us with a three-quarter length portrait of a young woman seated gracefully. She wears a stunning Victorian gown adorned with intricate bead necklaces, exuding an air of timeless beauty and sophistication. Her wistful expression suggests that she is lost in her own thoughts, perhaps reminiscing about cherished memories or longing for something beyond reach. Mostyn often featured the same woman as his figure subject, most likely his wife. This recurring motif adds an intimate touch to his works and invites viewers to delve deeper into their narratives. The artist's mastery lies not only in his ability to capture physical likeness but also in infusing each brushstroke with emotion and poetic vision. This exquisite print allows us to appreciate every detail of "A Viennese Memory" showcasing its vibrant colors and intricate textures.
