EDITORS COMMENTS
The lithograph print of "The Return of Fa Hsien" by Henry Charles Seppings Wright captures a pivotal moment in the history of Buddhism. Fa Hsien, a Chinese monk, embarked on a fifteen-year journey to India in AD 399 to bring back sacred texts and relics of Buddhism. This image depicts his return to China with these precious treasures, symbolizing the spread and enrichment of Buddhist teachings. Fa Hsien's travels were instrumental in introducing new elements of Indian Buddhism to China, influencing the development of the religion in the region. The presence of Kumarajiva, an Indian missionary who had previously visited China, further highlights the cultural exchange between these two ancient civilizations. Wright's detailed illustration for Hutchinson's History of Nations beautifully conveys the significance of Fa Hsien's pilgrimage and its impact on Chinese Buddhism. The coastal setting adds a sense of adventure and discovery to the scene, emphasizing the long and arduous journey undertaken by this devoted monk. This black-and-white lithograph not only serves as a visual representation of historical events but also as a reminder of the enduring legacy left behind by individuals like Fa Hsien who dedicated their lives to spreading spiritual wisdom across borders. It is truly a testament to the power and influence that faith can have on shaping cultures and societies throughout history.
