Two Chicks, c. 1694 (ink on paper)

6124997 Two Chicks, c.1694 (ink on paper) by Da, Zhu (1625-1705); 89.1x40 cm; Minneapolis Institute of Arts, MN, USA; (add.info.: Zhu Da, also known as Bada Shanren, often expressed complex ideas using simple images. It is likely that these quickly rendered chicks express the artists loyalty to the former Ming dynasty, while indicating his contempt for the ruling Manchus. Zhu Da saw himself as being in, but not part of, the society around him. With his imperial lineage eradicated by the conquering Manchus, he was unable to submit to the foreign rulers. Although the chicks are of the same species and face in complementary directions, they do not look at each other. Each isolated chick exists in a separate world. The inscription reads: Painted in the Garden of Yellow Bamboo by Bada Shanren, the nineteenth day of the third lunar month. The nineteenth day of the third lunar month is now known to commemorate the day in 1644 when the last Ming emperor hanged himself as rebel forces approached the capital.); Photo: eMinneapolis Institute of Arts, MN, USA; Gift of Ruth and Bruce Dayton; Chinese, out of copyright

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the artwork "Two Chicks" by Zhu Da, also known as Bada Shanren, a renowned Chinese artist from the 17th century. Created in 1694 using ink on paper, this piece measures 89.1x40 cm and is housed at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts in Minnesota, USA. Zhu Da was known for his ability to convey profound ideas through simple imagery, and "Two Chicks" is no exception. These hastily drawn chicks are believed to symbolize Zhu Da's loyalty to the former Ming dynasty while expressing his disdain for the ruling Manchus. As an individual who saw himself as part of society but not fully integrated into it due to his imperial lineage being eradicated by foreign rulers, he could not submit to their authority. Although these two chicks belong to the same species and face opposite directions, they do not make eye contact with each other. Each chick exists in its own isolated world, reflecting Zhu Da's sense of detachment from those around him. The inscription on this artwork reveals that it was painted by Bada Shanren in the Garden of Yellow Bamboo on the nineteenth day of the third lunar month. Interestingly, this date commemorates a significant event: when rebel forces approached China's capital in 1644, marking the day when the last Ming emperor tragically took his own life. This thought-provoking image captures both Zhu Da's artistic prowess and his complex emotions towards societal changes during that time period.
