EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable ancient artifact known as the "Vessel terminating in the forepart of a stag". Crafted around 1300 BC by Hittite artisans, this silver horn-shaped drinking vessel is adorned with intricate gold inlay. The attention to detail is awe-inspiring, as every element of the stag's form has been meticulously fashioned. The vessel features a unique construction method, with the head joined to the body through a checkerboard-patterned ring. The horns and handle are attached separately, adding an extra layer of complexity to its design. Hittite texts reveal that these vessels were created for their gods, taking on the shape of their animal counterparts. Adorning the rim is a frieze depicting a religious ceremony, where divinities are offered incense and gifts by three kneeling men. A goddess wearing a conical crown holds a bird of prey while standing next to a male god perched atop another stag with his falcon companion. This artwork not only serves as an exquisite example of Anatolian metalwork from the Bronze Age but also offers insights into Hittite mythology and hunting traditions. It stands proudly at New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art, inviting viewers to marvel at its beauty and unravel its rich symbolism.
