Christ, a knight and a demon, detail, 1357-64 (fresco)

6262833 Christ, a knight and a demon, detail, 1357-64 (fresco) by Ugolino di Prete, Ilario (1330-c.1404) & others; Duomo (Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta), Orvieto, Umbria, Italy; (add.info.: The interior, the Chapel of the Corporale
Consistently with the destination of the Chapel, the iconographic program of the cycle has as its object not only the episodes of the Bolsena Mass, but in general the mystery of Transubstantiation. In fact, in addition to the miracle of Bolsena, several other prodigies are depicted - mostly they are episodes taken from exempla developed with a didactic purpose - which would demonstrate the real presence of the body of Christ in the consecrated Particola. Complete the decoration scenes of the Passion of Christ and in particular the representation of the Last Supper, precisely the institution of the Eucharist.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a mesmerizing detail from the fresco "Christ, a knight and a demon" by Ugolino di Prete, Ilario and others. Located in the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta in Orvieto, Italy, specifically in the Chapel of the Corporale, this artwork forms part of an elaborate iconographic program centered around the mystery of Transubstantiation. The focal point of this detail is Christ himself, depicted alongside a knight and a demon. The scene not only represents the miracle of Bolsena but also showcases various other prodigies that aim to demonstrate the real presence of Christ's body in consecrated bread. These additional episodes are drawn from exempla with didactic purposes. Surrounding this central composition are scenes depicting different moments from Christ's Passion and particularly emphasize the Last Supper—the institution of the Eucharist. The intricate details and vibrant colors bring these religious narratives to life within this sacred space. Photographer Ghigo Roli expertly captures every nuance and brushstroke through his lens, allowing viewers to appreciate both the artistry involved in creating such masterpieces as well as their spiritual significance.
