EDITORS COMMENTS
This coloured engraving, titled "The Indian Bustard" showcases the exquisite artistry of George Edwards and Michael Seligmann. Originally engraved by Edwards in the 18th century, this print is a re-engraved version by Seligmann that combines elements from both artists' works. "The Indian Bustard" is part of a larger collection known as "A Natural History of Uncommon Birds and Gleanings of Natural History". Seligmann, a talented German engraver and art dealer, added his own touch to the plates by translating names into German and incorporating additional figures and plants not found in the original illustrations. This particular piece captures the beauty and majesty of an Indian Bustard, also known as Otis Bengalensis or Churge. The bird stands tall with its elegant feathers on full display against a backdrop that highlights its natural habitat. Every intricate detail has been meticulously captured through delicate engravings, showcasing both the artistic skill of these two remarkable individuals and their passion for depicting nature's wonders. "The Indian Bustard" print serves as a testament to the enduring fascination humans have had with birds throughout history. It invites viewers to appreciate not only the aesthetic appeal but also gain insight into scientific discoveries made during that era. This timeless artwork continues to inspire awe and admiration for our feathered friends while preserving an important chapter in natural history illustration.
