5929557 Major Thomas Egerton and a sentry, 77th (The East Middlesex) Regiment, Portsmouth, 1849 (photograph of painting) by Cunliffe, Daniel (fl.1843); National Army Museum, London; (add.info.: Major (later Colonel) Thomas Graham Egerton and a sentry of the 77th (The East Middlesex) Regiment of Foot, on the Kings Bastion, Portsmouth, 1849.
Over-painted photograph after Daniel Cunliffe, 1849.
Egerton was killed on the night of 19 April 1855 leading an attack against the defences of Sevastopol. Lord Raglan described his capture of the Russian rifle pits, known from then on as Egertons Pit, as a brilliant achievement, which was dearly bought by the sacrifice of Colonel Egerton, who was one of the best officers in the army, and looked up to by all.
The sentry is reputed to be Private Alexander Wright (1826-1858), Egertons soldier servant, who was later awarded the Victoria Cross: for conspicuous bravery through the whole Crimean War. Highly distinguished on the night of 22 March, 1855, in repelling a sortie. Highly distinguished at the taking of the Rifle Pits on the night of 19 April, 1855; remarked for the great encouragement he gave the men while holding the Pits under a terrible fire. He was wounded. Highly distinguished on 30 Aug. 1855. ); © National Army Museum

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures Major Thomas Egerton and a sentry from the 77th (The East Middlesex) Regiment of Foot in Portsmouth, 1849. The image is an over-painted photograph after Daniel Cunliffe's original painting. Major Thomas Graham Egerton was a highly respected officer who tragically lost his life on the night of April 19,1855, during an attack on the defenses of Sevastopol. Lord Raglan praised Egerton's bravery and described his capture of the Russian rifle pits as a brilliant achievement that came at a great cost. He was known as one of the best officers in the army and deeply admired by all. The sentry standing beside Major Egerton is believed to be Private Alexander Wright, who served as Egerton's soldier servant. Wright later received the Victoria Cross for his outstanding bravery throughout the Crimean War. He displayed remarkable courage during a sortie on March 22,1855, and played a crucial role in capturing the Rifle Pits on April 19th under intense enemy fire. This historic photograph not only commemorates Major Thomas Egerton but also pays tribute to Private Alexander Wright's exceptional service and valor. It serves as a poignant reminder of their sacrifices and contributions during this significant period in military history.
