EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable piece of history - the Travelling inkwell, c. 1815. Crafted with exquisite detail and precision, this inkwell is made from gilt brass, pewter, and glass. It was patented as the Perryian Filter Inkstand by James Perry and Company in London. The significance of this inkwell lies not only in its craftsmanship but also in its connection to Captain William Tyrwhitt Drake of the Royal Regiment of Horse Guards. During his active service in the Napoleonic Wars from 1803 to 1815, Captain Drake relied on this very inkwell for his writing needs. One can't help but imagine the countless letters written by Captain Drake using this portable treasure while he fought alongside Major-General Edward Somerset's Household Cavalry Brigade at Waterloo in 1815. In that historic battle, he bravely participated in an attack on advancing French infantry near La Haye Sainte. As we gaze upon this image captured by Bridgeman Images, we are transported back to an era where handwritten correspondence played a vital role in communication during times of war and travel. The Travelling inkwell serves as a tangible reminder of the dedication and sacrifice exhibited by officers like Captain William Tyrwhitt Drake. Let us cherish these relics from our past that offer glimpses into extraordinary lives lived amidst tumultuous times - where words penned with quill and ink carried messages across vast distances and connected hearts separated by war's ravages.
