Alexander Selkirk shipped as sailing master in one of Dampier's buccaneer ships, the Cinque Ports in 1703. EDITORS COMMENTS
This colour lithograph captures the essence of adventure and solitude in Sea Adventure: The original Robinson Crusoe. The image depicts Alexander Selkirk, the real-life inspiration for Daniel Defoe's iconic character, stranded on the remote island of Juan Fernandez off the Chilean coast. Selkirk, a sailing master on a buccaneer ship, chose to be marooned on the island after quarreling with his crewmates.
Living alone for over four years, Selkirk's story of survival and resilience inspired one of the most famous novels in literary history. This illustration is part of a set of cigarette cards on Sea Adventure issued by Hignett Brothers in 1939, showcasing moments of maritime exploration and daring exploits.
The vivid colours and intricate details bring this historical tale to life, transporting viewers back to a time when brave sailors faced unknown dangers at sea. The image evokes a sense of mystery and wonder as we imagine Selkirk's daily struggles and triumphs during his solitary existence.
Sea Adventure: The original Robinson Crusoe is not just a work of art but also a window into an extraordinary chapter in human history. It serves as a reminder of our enduring fascination with stories of survival against all odds and the indomitable spirit that drives us to overcome adversity.
