EDITORS COMMENTS
This colour lithograph captures the essence of past and present in the world of aviation. The image showcases two significant moments in history - Lilienthal Gliding in 1891 and Cobham's Aeroplane in 1926, highlighting the evolution of aerial flight over time. Otto Lilienthal, a pioneer in aerial flight, dedicated years to studying bird flight and successfully made over 2,000 glides using bat-like wings before tragically losing his life in 1896. His contributions paved the way for future aviators like Sir Alan Cobham, who achieved remarkable feats such as flying from London to Rangoon and back, as well as from London to Cape Town and back. From gravity-powered glides to long-distance flights propelled by powerful engines, this print encapsulates the progress made in science and technology during the early twentieth century. With intricate details capturing moments of takeoff and flight against windy weather conditions, this artwork serves as a reminder of how far we have come in our quest for innovation and exploration. It celebrates human ingenuity and perseverance that continue to drive advancements in aviation today.
