In November the British tried to dislodge Shir Singh, who with about 35, 000 Sikhs, had occupied a position behind the Chenab opposite Ramnugger. A cavalry force under General Cureton failed owing to the unexpected strength of the Sikh artillery, which was well posted and served and he was killed.
