Circular brass button by Smith, Kemp and Wright of Birmingham, with numeral A 6A within a French circle and dot, surrounded by the regimental title, A European RegimentA and a wreath.
The 6th Bengal European Regiment was an infantry regiment raised in Bengal in 1858 by the British East India Company, for service in the Indian Mutiny (1857-1859). The A EuropeanA in its title denotes that other ranks as well as officers were drawn from the European population in India.
The regiment composed of officers drawn from two Indian units, which had mutinied, the 7th Bengal Native Infantry and 8th Bengal Native Infantry. The 6th were initially based at Hazaribagh in Bihar, a state where some of the last rebel partisans of the Indian Mutiny (1857-1859) were operating on the Nepal border.
Following the end of the Mutiny the regiment were placed under the command of the Crown. The regiment was reduced to cadre strength in 1861, losing most of its rank and file to other units, and it was finally disbanded in 1867.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a brass button from the 6th Bengal European Regiment, dating back to the years 1858-1861. The button, crafted by Smith, Kemp and Wright of Birmingham, features a circular design with the numeral A 6A enclosed within a French circle and dot. Surrounding this central emblem is the regimental title "A European Regiment" along with an elegant wreath. The 6th Bengal European Regiment was established in Bengal by the British East India Company during the Indian Mutiny (1857-1859). Notably, this infantry regiment included both officers and other ranks drawn from the European population residing in India at that time. Its formation was necessitated by mutinies within two Indian units - the 7th Bengal Native Infantry and 8th Bengal Native Infantry. Initially stationed in Hazaribagh, Bihar, where remnants of rebel partisans were active near Nepal's border, this regiment played a crucial role in quelling unrest during the Indian Mutiny. Following its successful mission, it came under Crown command but faced significant downsizing in 1861 as most rank and file members were transferred to other units. Ultimately disbanded in 1867 after serving for nearly a decade. This remarkable artifact belongs to Field Marshal Sir John Chapple's esteemed Indian Army Collection housed at London's National Army Museum. It provides us with an intriguing glimpse into history while honoring those who served bravely during one of India's most tumultuous periods.
