EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a German standard bearer or porte-ensigne from the 16th century. The rich and vibrant colors of his velvet and silk costume indicate that he belonged to a private regiment. Adorned in a green jacket, breeches, and stockings, his ensemble is accentuated by pink puff sleeves, a white lace ruff, and a stylish green bonnet. In this image captured by Edmond Lechevallier-Chevignard and handcolored by E. Lechevallier-Chevignard himself along with A. Didier, L. Flameng, and F. Laguillermie; we witness the standard bearer proudly carrying an orange flag over his shoulder. The lithograph originates from Georges Duplessis' renowned publication "Costumes historiques des XVIe, XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles" (Historical costumes of the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries) released in Paris in 1867 as part of an ongoing series on historical costumes initiated by Camille Bonnard and Paul Mercuri in 1830. Georges Duplessis was not only the curator of Prints at Bibliotheque nationale but also the author behind this remarkable compilation of historical attire. Meanwhile, Edmond Lechevallier-Chevignard contributed as an artist, book illustrator, interior designer for public buildings and churches while holding the prestigious title of professor at the National School of Decorative Arts since 1874. This exquisite print offers us a glimpse into history through its meticulous details capturing both fashion trends during that era as well as showcasing individuals who played significant roles within their regiments.
