Lance, pattern 1846, 1848 (wood and steel)
5921031 Lance, pattern 1846, 1848 (wood and steel) by British School, (19th century); National Army Museum, London; (add.info.: Lance, pattern 1846, 1848.
Enfield manufacture, 1848.
At the time of the Crimean War (1854-56) British lancer regiments used the nine-feet-long (2.74 m) Pattern 1846 Lance. This type of lance would have been carried by the 17th Regiment of Light Dragoons (Lancers) during the Charge of the Light Brigade at the Battle of Balaklava on 25 October 1854. They were the only British lancer regiment involved in the battle.
The lance is fitted with a red and white pennon, just below the spearhead. The use of these pennons was originally intended to disconcert the horses of opposing cavalry in close combat, but they eventually became a decorative parade item, normally removed or wrapped in a canvas cover on active service.); © National Army Museum

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Lance, pattern 1846,1848, a remarkable piece of weaponry from the 19th century. Created by the British School and currently housed in the National Army Museum in London, this lance holds great historical significance. During the Crimean War (1854-56), British lancer regiments relied on this nine-feet-long (2.74 m) Pattern 1846 Lance. The lance depicted here would have been carried by the renowned 17th Regiment of Light Dragoons (Lancers) during their heroic Charge of the Light Brigade at the Battle of Balaklava on October 25,1854. Interestingly, they were the only British lancer regiment involved in that fateful battle. The lance is adorned with a striking red and white pennon just below its spearhead. Originally designed to unsettle enemy cavalry horses during close combat encounters, these pennons eventually evolved into decorative parade items. However, when actively engaged in service, they were typically removed or concealed under a protective canvas cover. This photograph not only captures an exquisite work of art but also serves as a poignant reminder of bravery and sacrifice exhibited by troops throughout history. It symbolizes both strength and elegance while offering us a glimpse into military traditions from long ago. Image credit: Bridgeman Images via Fine Art Finder
