Image of the globe of the world, 1573 (copperplate engraving on paper)

7340119 Image of the globe of the world, 1573 (copperplate engraving on paper) by Ortelius, Abraham (1527-98); 42x53 cm; National Maritime Museum, London, UK; (add.info.: Creator: Abraham Ortelius; Franciscus Hogenburgus
'Typus Orbis Terrarum', an atlas sheet from an edition of Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, with Latin text, published in 1573, this is a hand coloured copperplate engraving. It depicts the world on an oval projection, surrounded by sky. Notable features are the vast southern continent, Terra Australis Nondum Cognita (southern land not yet discovered) and the straightforward-looking Northwest and Northeast Passages through the Arctic. The motto below the map is a quotation from Cicero (Tusculanae Disputatianes IV. 1 7. 37) Quid ei potest videri magnum in rebus humanis, cui aeternitas omnis, totiusque mundi nota sit magnitudo (For what human affairs can seem important to a man who keeps all eternity before his eyes and knows the vastness of the universe?). The title and motto are placed in strapwork panels. The sea areas are decorated with a ship, a whale, a flying fish and another sea creature.); © National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, London

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning copperplate engraving from 1573 by Abraham Ortelius captures the beauty and complexity of the world as it was known at that time. The image, part of an atlas sheet from Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, showcases a detailed map on an oval projection surrounded by sky. Notable features include the vast southern continent labeled Terra Australis Nondum Cognita (southern land not yet discovered) and the potential Northwest and Northeast Passages through the Arctic. The Latin motto below the map, taken from Cicero, reflects on the insignificance of human affairs in comparison to eternity and the vastness of the universe. The intricate details in this hand-colored engraving are truly remarkable - from decorative sea creatures to a ship sailing across the waters. It's a reminder of how far we've come in our understanding of geography and exploration since Ortelius first created this masterpiece over four centuries ago. Displayed at the National Maritime Museum in London, this print serves as both a historical artifact and a work of art that continues to inspire wonder and curiosity about our world.
