EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the exquisite craftsmanship of the "Childs Throne" created in 1822 by Pierre-Marie le Jeune Balny. Carved from gilded wood and adorned with luxurious leather upholstery, this chair was specifically made for the young heir presumed to be Henri V, who briefly ruled as the last direct Bourbon line successor to the French throne in 1830. Atop the chair's backrest, we find a remarkable depiction of France and Minerva, symbolizing protection and wisdom respectively, guarding over the young prince at its center. The upholstery is beautifully embellished with fleurs-de-lis and Gallic roosters - iconic symbols representing both French royalty and its people. The attention to detail is evident not only in its ornate design but also through inscriptions found within. Stenciled inside the back rail reads "BLONDEL TAPISSIER/RUE ST. ANTOINE N 72" indicating that it was crafted by Blondel Tapissier on Rue St. Antoine No. 72 in Paris during that era. Additionally, an ink inscription along the lower edge of the back rail reveals a date: "12 JANVIER 18[22?]". Now housed at Cleveland Museum of Art in Ohio, USA, this splendid piece serves as a testament to historical artistry and regal opulence captured within furniture design during early nineteenth-century France. Its intricate patterns, gilt decorations, and cushioned comfort make it an extraordinary example of decorative
