EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the spirit of resilience and community during the World War II Home Front in London. Taken in the Fulham area of West London by German-born photographer Heinz Zinram, the image shows men and young boys diligently filling sandbags in the street. The sandbags, piled against buildings and lower level windows, acted as shock absorbers to mitigate the worst effects of bomb blasts during the relentless air raids of the Blitz. The scene is one of determined preparation, with men carrying spades and pick axes, and young lads helping out with bags. The four pictures in this series attest to the unity and togetherness in the face of adversity that characterized the British Home Front. The sandbags, stacked high on the back of a 2nd lorry, are a testament to the massive effort to fortify buildings and protect the population from the devastating effects of bombs. This historical photograph is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made during WWII and the indomitable spirit of the British people.
