Andrew Bonar Law Collection

Andrew Bonar Law (1858-1923) was a British Conservative politician and Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1922 to 1923. He was born in Rexton, New Brunswick, Canada, but moved to Scotland at the age of two. He studied law at Glasgow University and then worked as a lawyer in London. In 1900 he was elected to Parliament for the Scottish constituency of North East Lanarkshire and held various government posts before becoming Prime Minister in 1922. During his time as Prime Minister he introduced measures such as reducing unemployment benefits and cutting taxes on alcohol and tobacco. He also oversaw Britain's withdrawal from Ireland which led to the creation of Northern Ireland. Bonar Law resigned due to ill health in 1923, but remained an influential figure within the Conservative Party until his death later that year.
