EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the entry into Aqaba during the Battle of Aqaba, Jordan, on July 6, 1917, during the Arab Revolt of the First World War. The scene is set in the arid desert landscape, with a dusty and tattered flag fluttering in the wind at the entrance of the port city. British and Arab forces, led by the legendary Lawrence of Arabia, charged into Aqaba on horseback and camel, their faces etched with determination and the grit of war time. The horses, their coats caked with dust, plodded forward, their riders clad in uniforms of the Great War era. The Battle of Aqaba was a significant victory for the Arab forces and the British, as it opened up the Red Sea to Allied supply routes and allowed for the advancement towards Damascus. The dry, dusty terrain, the horses and camels, and the raised flags, all contribute to the raw and authentic depiction of this pivotal moment in military history.
