EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the biblical story of Elisha, the prophet, healing Naaman, the captain of the Syrian army, of his leprosy. In the Old Testament of the Bible, as recorded in 2 Kings 5:1-14, Naaman, a mighty warrior, was afflicted with this debilitating disease. Seeking a cure, he traveled to Israel, bringing with him a letter from his master, the king of Syria, requesting that Elisha, the prophet, heal him. Upon meeting Elisha, Naaman was initially disappointed when the prophet did not appear in person, instead sending his servant to instruct Naaman to bathe seven times in the Jordan River. Naaman, a proud and important man, was skeptical and resistant to this seemingly simple solution. However, after much persuasion from his servants, he reluctantly followed Elisha's instructions. Naaman's first few attempts to bathe in the Jordan River were met with frustration and disappointment. But on the seventh occasion, he experienced a remarkable transformation. His leprosy was cured, and his skin was restored to its former health and vitality. Overjoyed, Naaman returned to Elisha to express his gratitude and to offer gifts, but the prophet refused, reminding Naaman that there is no limit to the power of God's healing touch. This historical event, depicted in this beautiful print from Mary Evans Picture Library, serves as a powerful reminder of the transformative power of faith and the healing properties of water. The image transports us back in time, allowing us to witness the unfolding of this miraculous biblical tale and to reflect on the enduring themes of faith, perseverance, and the power of God's grace.
