EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving, made in 1886, captures Archibald Philip Primrose, the 5th Earl of Rosebery, during his tenure as Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs. At the time of this image, Earl Rosebery was a prominent figure in British politics, having previously served as President of the Board of Trade and Leader of the Liberal Party. Earl Rosebery is best known for his success in the world of horse racing. An avid racegoer and horse owner, he won the Derby an impressive three times: in 1879 with the horse Persimmon, in 1882 with Eclipse, and in 1899 with the horse Spearmint. His love for horses extended beyond personal enjoyment, as he was also a strong advocate for the importation of American Thoroughbreds to improve the British racing industry. In 1894, following the retirement of Prime Minister Gladstone, Earl Rosebery assumed the role of Prime Minister himself. His time in office was brief, lasting only until 1895, but it marked a significant moment in his political career. The engraving serves as a testament to Earl Rosebery's multifaceted achievements, both in the political sphere and on the racecourse. Earl Archibald Philip Primrose, 5th Earl of Rosebery, was born on January 3, 1847, and passed away on December 26, 1929.
