EDITORS COMMENTS
This print depicts Enguerrand de Dunois, also known as the Bastard of Orléans, a pivotal figure in French military history during the Hundred Years War with England. Born in 1403 as the illegitimate son of Louis, Duke of Orléans, Dunois distinguished himself as an outstanding general and a trusted associate of Joan of Arc. Dunois' military career began at a young age, and he quickly gained recognition for his bravery and strategic acumen. In 1429, he played a crucial role in the relief of Orléans, a turning point in the war, which was under siege by the English. Dunois' leadership and tactics helped to break the English lines, allowing the French forces to reclaim the city. After Joan of Arc's capture in 1430, Dunois continued to fight against the English, leading various campaigns and battles. He was a key figure in the Battle of Formigny in 1450, which marked a significant victory for the French. Dunois' association with Joan of Arc further solidified his legacy in French history. He was a devout supporter of her cause and helped to secure her release from prison in 1436. After her death in 1431, he continued to champion her memory and her role in the French victory. Enguerrand de Dunois passed away in 1468, leaving behind a rich military legacy. His leadership and strategic abilities were instrumental in the French victory against the English during the Hundred Years War. This print serves as a testament to his remarkable military career and his enduring place in French history.
