The Defenders of Rome, a group of Bersaglieri in the papal service, are seen manning the fortifications, prepared for an expected attack by the forces of Giuseppe Garibaldi. Garibaldi, a legendary figure in Italian history, had been leading a campaign to unify Italy under a single government, and his troops were making their way north from the southern regions. The papal states, which included the city of Rome itself, were the last holdouts against the Italian unification movement. The Bersaglieri, an elite infantry corps known for their marksmanship and mobility, were a key part of the papal defense forces.
