In this historic photograph, Count Ottokar Czernin of Hungary (left) and Richard von Kuhlmann of Germany (right) are seen disembarking from a train at Brest Litovsk, Russia (now Brest, Belarus) on 20 December 1917. The two diplomats had come to the eastern Russian city to negotiate the terms of a peace treaty between the Central Powers and the Soviet government, following the collapse of the Russian Empire during World War I. As the Austro-Hungarian Foreign Minister and the German Foreign Secretary, respectively, Czernin and Kuhlmann played pivotal roles in the diplomatic efforts to end the conflict. The Treaty of Brest-Litovsk, signed on 3 March 1918, marked the first major military and political victory for the Central Powers during World War I. The treaty granted Germany and Austria-Hungary significant territorial gains at the expense of Russia, allowing them to focus their military resources on the Western Front.
