Commune Damage 11: The Ruins of Pont de Champigny, Paris, 1871 During the tumultuous events of the Paris Commune in 1871, the city's bridges became strategic targets for the Communard forces as they sought to hamper the advance of the French government troops aiming to recapture Paris. In this haunting image, all that remains of the Pont de Champigny stands as a testament to the destruction wrought during those fateful days. The Paris Commune was a revolutionary period in French history that lasted from March 18 to May 28, 1871. Following the Franco-Prussian War and the abdication of Napoleon III, the people of Paris, led by the working class, established a radical government to govern the city.
