EDITORS COMMENTS
In this elegant and captivating portrait, Charlotte Maria Barrington, later Countess of Strathmore, is depicted in her youthful beauty and refined grace. Born in 1854, Charlotte was the eldest daughter of the Hon. Charles Barrington and his wife, Lady Elizabeth Somerset. Her striking features and poised demeanor were the talk of high society, making her a desirable match for many eligible bachelors. However, it was Thomas Lyon, the Twelfth Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne, who ultimately captured Charlotte's heart. Their union took place on May 23, 1877, at St. George's Hanover Square in London. The Earl, who was 22 years her senior, was enamored by Charlotte's charm and intelligence, and the couple went on to have a long and loving marriage. This portrait, taken around the time of their wedding, showcases Charlotte's timeless beauty and the beginning of her journey as Countess of Strathmore. She is dressed in a high-necked, long-sleeved gown with intricate lace detailing, accessorized with a delicate necklace and earrings. Her hair is styled in an elegant updo, adorned with a pearl and feather headpiece. The Earl and Countess of Strathmore went on to have five children together, and Charlotte proved to be an exceptional wife and mother. She was known for her kindness, generosity, and her dedication to her family and community. Her legacy as a loving wife and devoted mother continues to inspire generations. This beautiful portrait, taken by an unknown photographer, is a testament to the enduring love story of Charlotte Maria Barrington and Thomas Lyon, the Twelfth Earl of Strathmore. It is a reminder of the power of love and the beauty of the past.
