Despard's unwavering commitment to securing the right to vote for women led her to establish the Women's Freedom League (WFL) in 1907. Despard's activism began in the late 19th century, as she became increasingly frustrated with the slow progress towards women's suffrage. She was a founding member of the Women's Social and Political Union (WSPU) and participated in various militant protests, including window-breaking and arson. However, she grew disillusioned with the WSPU's tactics and their focus on the more affluent women, and decided to form the WFL to advocate for the rights of working-class women. The WFL's approach was more radical than other suffrage organizations, as they believed that women's suffrage should be granted without property qualifications.
