Born in 1630, Charles II was the eldest surviving son of King Charles I and Henrietta Maria of France. After the execution of his father in 1649, Charles went into exile in France and later in the Netherlands, where he spent over two decades planning his restoration to the English throne. In 1660, following the death of Oliver Cromwell and the collapse of the Commonwealth, Charles returned to England and was welcomed back by the people. He was crowned on May 23, 1661, marking the beginning of a new era in English history.
