Tanks being loaded onto Rectank flat wagons, c. 1940

Three tanks are being loaded onto Rectank flat wagons which were designed and built specifically for the movement of military vehicles by rail. The GW lettering on the side of the Rectank shows that the railway company owned the wagons in this image. Many of the other wagons used to transport military equipment were owned by the War Department and then shared between the various railway companies as and when they were needed. The careful manoeuvre of these tanks is being overseen by a number of both military and railway personnel

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in history during World War II. Three mighty tanks are being meticulously loaded onto Rectank flat wagons, specifically designed for the transportation of military vehicles by rail. The prominent GW lettering on the side of the Rectank indicates that these wagons were owned by the Great Western Railway company. Unlike many other wagons used for transporting military equipment, which were owned by the War Department and shared among various railway companies as needed, this image showcases the ownership of these particular wagons. It is a testament to both the efficiency and collaboration between military and railway personnel during wartime. The careful maneuvering of these formidable tanks is evident as both military and railway personnel oversee every step. Their synchronized efforts ensure that these powerful weapons are securely loaded onto their designated transport, ready to be deployed wherever they may be required. This photograph serves as a reminder of the crucial role played by railways in supporting war efforts, enabling swift movement of heavy machinery across vast distances. It also highlights how different entities came together with a common purpose during times of conflict. Preserved within STEAM Museum's collection, this image offers us a glimpse into an era where nations mobilized all available resources to defend their cause – showcasing not only technological advancements but also human dedication towards victory.
