EDITORS COMMENTS
Men Leaving Swindon Works, Rodbourne Road Entrance, c.1910: A Snapshot of Industrial Life This evocative photograph captures a moment in time as men stream out of Swindon Works through the Rodbourne Road entrance, around the turn of the twentieth century. Swindon Works was the largest railway works in the world at the time, employing over 12,000 people, and was the hub of Great Western Railway (GWR) engineering and manufacturing. The men in this image, dressed in heavy work clothes and carrying tools, appear focused and determined as they leave the works after a long day. Their faces show a mix of fatigue and relief, reflecting the physical demands of their jobs. The scene is one of order and discipline, with the men filing out in an orderly fashion, each following the man in front. The photograph also offers a glimpse into the daily life of Swindon's industrial community. The women and children waiting at the entrance suggest the support networks that were essential for the workers and their families. The horse-drawn carts and bicycles in the foreground hint at the various modes of transportation available to the workers, while the tall chimneys of the works in the background underscore the scale and importance of the industrial complex. This photograph is a poignant reminder of Swindon's rich industrial heritage and the lives of the men and women who contributed to the success of the Great Western Railway. It invites us to reflect on the past and consider the ways in which the town and its people have evolved over the past century.
