Tufa towers

Tufa towers at Lake Mono, California, USA. Tufa is a mineral deposit formed by the precipitation of calcium salts from water saturated with bicarbonates. These formations were formed underwater when calcium-rich underwater springs mixed with the carbonate-rich lake water. They became exposed in the mid-20th century when the lakes tributaries were diverted to support the growth of Los Angeles, resulting in a drop in the lakes water level. The lake is an important habitat for bird species. Since the mid-1990s a campaign to protect the lake has resulted in an increase in its water level. Photographed in July

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning print captures the mesmerizing beauty of Tufa towers at Lake Mono, California, USA. These unique formations are a result of the intricate process of mineral deposition from water saturated with bicarbonates. Once submerged underwater, these towers were formed when calcium-rich springs mixed with carbonate-rich lake water. However, due to human intervention in the mid-20th century, when the lake's tributaries were diverted to support Los Angeles' growth, these magnificent structures became exposed as the water level dropped. Lake Mono is not only known for its geological wonders but also serves as an essential habitat for various bird species. Recognizing its ecological significance and threatened state, a campaign was initiated in the mid-1990s to protect this precious lake resulting in an increase in its water level. The photograph was taken during July against a backdrop of a breathtaking sunset that illuminates nature's splendor. The image showcases the harmonious coexistence between land and water while highlighting the fragile balance within our environment. As we admire this scenic masterpiece captured by Science Photo Library, it reminds us of both the awe-inspiring beauty found in North America's landscapes and our responsibility to preserve them for future generations. This photograph encapsulates not just geographical marvels but also raises awareness about human threats posed towards natural ecosystems like Lake Mono – urging us all to prioritize conservation efforts and safeguard our planet's treasures.
