Illustration of the fine structure of the eye lens
Illustration of the fine structure of the eye lens. This is the internal optical component (also called the crystalline lens) of the eye, responsible for adjusting focus. The lens is composed of elongated epithelial cells, many of which have lost their nuclei (here, shown as dark blue dots). These cells, known as lamellar fibres, contain a crystalline protein giving them optical properties. The cell membranes of adjacent fibres are fused, which creates minimal interference to light. The anterior of the lens contains a single layer of cuboidal epithelium cells with nuclei. This complex pattern of cells is enclosed in a transparent membrane capsule

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from Science Photo Library showcases the intricate fine structure of the eye lens, providing a glimpse into the remarkable complexity that enables our visual sense. The internal optical component, also known as the crystalline lens, plays a crucial role in adjusting focus to ensure clear vision. Composed of elongated epithelial cells, this lens exhibits an intriguing pattern. Many of these cells have lost their nuclei, represented here by dark blue dots. These specialized cells are called lamellar fibres and contain a unique crystalline protein that grants them exceptional optical properties. To optimize light transmission without interference, the cell membranes of adjacent fibres fuse together seamlessly. This fusion creates minimal disruption to incoming light rays and allows for efficient focusing within the eye. Towards the front portion of the lens lies a single layer of cuboidal epithelium cells with visible nuclei. Enclosed within a transparent membrane capsule, this complex arrangement contributes to maintaining clarity and precision in our visual perception. Through this stunning artwork capturing both scientific accuracy and artistic beauty, we gain insight into one of nature's marvels—the human eye—and its incredible ability to perceive and interpret the world around us.
