Pentillie Castle, Pillaton, Cornwall. 1975

Built by Sir James Tillie in 1698, the castle became the seat of the Coryton family in the 18th century. In 1810 it was redesigned by Humphrey Repton in Gothic revival style. It was Grade II listed in 1968 but fell into disrepair and was the subject of a Country House Rescue programme on Channel 4 in 2009 and 2011. In 2018, the estate was still managed by the Coryton family. Photographer: Charles Woolf

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the magnificent Pentillie Castle, nestled in the picturesque village of Pillaton, Cornwall. Built by Sir James Tillie in 1698, this historic castle holds a rich and fascinating past. In the 18th century, it became the cherished seat of the esteemed Coryton family. In 1810, renowned architect Humphrey Repton lent his visionary touch to redesign Pentillie Castle in an enchanting Gothic revival style. This transformation further enhanced its grandeur and allure. Recognizing its architectural significance, Pentillie Castle was granted Grade II listed status in 1968. However, as time passed, neglect took its toll on this majestic estate. Falling into disrepair over the years, it faced an uncertain future until Channel 4's Country House Rescue programme intervened with a restoration project in both 2009 and 2011. Today, thanks to dedicated efforts from both professionals and the Coryton family themselves who still manage the estate as of 2018; Pentillie Castle stands proudly once again. Its breathtaking beauty serves as a testament to Cornwall's rich heritage and exemplifies timeless elegance that has captivated generations. Photographed by Charles Woolf with great skill and attention to detail; this image perfectly captures not only the architectural splendor but also evokes a sense of nostalgia for days gone by when country houses like these were at their zenith – symbols of wealth and prestige amidst Cornish landscapes steeped in history.
