EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from 1955 showcases the charming town of Lewes in East Sussex, as captured by renowned artist Terence Cuneo. Produced for British Railways (BR), Southern Region (SR), this poster offers a glimpse into the daily life of a bygone era. In the foreground, we see a man diligently pushing a scissor-grinding machine along a picturesque street. Terence Cuneo, son of artists Cyrus and Nell Cuneo, was not only an accomplished designer of railway posters but also excelled in painting portraits and ceremonial and military subjects. His artistic talent shines through in this piece as he masterfully captures the essence of Lewes with its timber-fronted and timber-framed buildings. The scene evokes nostalgia for simpler times when such trades were commonplace on bustling streets like these. The poster transports us back to an era where craftsmanship thrived amidst the ever-changing landscape brought about by modernization. As we admire this artwork, it is impossible not to be drawn into the rich history that surrounds Lewes. This image serves as both a testament to British Railways' commitment to promoting local destinations and an homage to the hardworking individuals who contributed to their communities. With every brushstroke, Terence Cuneo immortalizes not just a place but also captures snippets of social dynamics within society during his time. This stunning railway poster stands as both artistry and historical documentation—a true treasure preserved by NRM/Cuneo Fine Arts for all enthusiasts of street
