EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the heart of London during one of its darkest times - The Blitz. It showcases a group of courageous women in the control room at The London Fire Service central HQ, diligently monitoring and coordinating the use of fire engines across the capital. The year is 1940, and Germany's relentless air raids have plunged Britain into chaos. These brave ladies work tirelessly day and night, ensuring that every fire engine is deployed effectively to combat the devastating fires caused by enemy bombings. The atmosphere in this control room must have been intense as they received crucial information about ongoing emergencies and provided instructions to firefighters on the ground. Their dedication and expertise were vital in saving lives amidst the chaos that engulfed London during those dark days. This particular photograph was taken on September 15th, 1940 - just a few weeks into The Blitz. Little did these women know that their resilience would be tested further as London endured one of its most destructive nights on December 29th, coinciding with Christmas celebrations. As we gaze upon this historical image, we are reminded not only of the bravery displayed by these unsung heroes but also of the immense sacrifices made by countless individuals throughout World War II.
