Field-Marshal Viscount Montgomery, Colonel of the Royal Warwickshire Regiment
Field-Marshal Viscount Montgomery, Colonel of the Royal Warwickshire Regiment, yesterday greeted about 250 guests who attended a garden party at the Regimental Headquarters, St. Johns House, Warwick. The guests had tea in a large marquee for rain swept down on the tables and chairs which had been placed in the grounds in the hope of fine weather. The regimental band which starts a recruiting tour next week and will be coming to Coventry, played under cover in a separate marquee. Among the guests, who were shown over the regimental museum, were officers of the regiment and their wives and civic officials from throughout the county. The garden party was the first to be held since the regiment moved its headquarters to St. Johns House in August last year. It is intended to be an annual function in place of similar gatherings which were held at the Budbrooke Regimental Depot which has now closed down. The officers attending included Lieut.-Col. H. C. Illing whois going to Germany next month to take over command of the 1st Battalion. The officers and men of the battalion are stationed at Hamelin where they were posted following a period of home leave on their return from Hong Kong.
In our photograph are Viscount Montgomery with the Mayor of Warwick, Alderman Mrs. I.E. Lees.

EDITORS COMMENTS
Field-Marshal Viscount Montgomery, Colonel of the Royal Warwickshire Regiment, warmly welcomes a gathering of about 250 guests at the Regimental Headquarters in St. Johns House, Warwick. The occasion was a delightful garden party held yesterday amidst hopes for fine weather that were dashed by rain. Undeterred, the guests sought shelter under a large marquee while enjoying tea and engaging conversations. The regimental band, preparing for an upcoming recruiting tour in Coventry, played their spirited tunes from another covered marquee nearby. Distinguished attendees included officers of the regiment accompanied by their spouses and esteemed civic officials representing various parts of the county. This memorable event marked the first garden party since the headquarters relocated to St. Johns House last August. It is now set to become an annual tradition replacing similar gatherings previously hosted at Budbrooke Regimental Depot which has since closed its doors. Amongst those captured in this timeless photograph are Field-Marshal Viscount Montgomery himself alongside Alderman Mrs. I. E. Lees, Mayor of Warwick – both radiating warmth and camaraderie. Lieut. -Col H. C Illing also graced this occasion before his imminent departure to Germany where he will assume command over the 1st Battalion stationed in Hamelin after returning from Hong Kong on home leave. This image serves as a cherished memento from July 11th, 1962 – capturing not just faces but also memories etched forever within our hearts.
