Winston Graham author novelist and screen writer October 1985 seated on a bench in his garden
Winston Graham was born in Manchester on June 30, 1910. He has been writing novels since the age of 17. Ross Poldark was first published in 1945, followed by Demelza in 1946, Jeremy Poldark in 1950, and Warleggan in 1953. He now lives in Sussex in Abbotswood House.
Before moving to Sussex, Winston Graham spent thirty years at Perranporth in Cornwall. There, at Flat Rocks, he wrote the first four Poldark books, which the Illustrated London News pronounced " not only rattling good yarns but full of incredibly detailed portraits of the early days of tin and copper mining."

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures Winston Graham, the renowned author, novelist, and screenwriter, in October 1985. Seated on a bench in his garden, Graham exudes an air of wisdom and creativity. Born on June 30,1910, in Manchester, he embarked on his writing journey at the tender age of 17. Graham's literary success soared with the publication of his iconic Poldark series. The first book in the series, Ross Poldark, was released in 1945 followed by Demelza (1946), Jeremy Poldark (1950), and Warleggan (1953). These novels transported readers to Cornwall's early days of tin and copper mining while weaving gripping tales that captivated audiences worldwide. After spending three decades at Perranporth in Cornwall crafting these remarkable stories from Flat Rocks – a place where inspiration seemed to flow effortlessly – Graham eventually settled down in Sussex's Abbotswood House. His move marked a new chapter for this prolific writer who continued to enchant readers with his words. The Illustrated London News hailed Graham's work as "not only rattling good yarns but full of incredibly detailed portraits" depicting historical mining practices. This accolade speaks volumes about the depth and authenticity found within each page penned by this literary genius. As we gaze upon this photograph taken during the vibrant decade of the 1980s, we are reminded not only of Winston Graham's immense talent but also his profound impact on literature and storytelling
