EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the early 20th century, where Trafford Park in Manchester stood as a prominent hub for engineering. The Westinghouse factory, which would later undergo several transformations to become Metropolitan Vickers, GEC, GEC Alsthom, and finally Alstom, is the focal point of this historical image. Dated August 3rd, 1901, the photograph captures a significant moment in time - the laying of the Main Office foundation stone. However, an unfortunate turn of events led to George Westinghouse falling ill on that very day. Stepping in his place was none other than the Lord Mayor of London himself who took charge of this symbolic act with assistance from Manchester's own Lord Mayor. As we delve into this snapshot frozen in time, our attention is drawn towards the grandeur and architectural beauty displayed by the arched windows adorning the ground floor of the Main Office building. These windows stand as witnesses to countless moments that unfolded within those walls throughout history. The scene depicted here encompasses not only a ceremonial event but also showcases elements such as bustling crowds and customs associated with opening ceremonies during that era. It serves as a reminder of how traditions were honored and celebrated amidst industrial progress. Preserved through Memory Lane Prints by Mirrorpix, this remarkable piece provides us with a glimpse into an important chapter in Manchester's engineering heritage – one that laid foundations for future innovations yet to come.
